A neighborhood on the West Side of New York is known as Chelsea. Part of Chelsea has become a major art center, with many of the galleries housed in new buildings and renovated warehouses. In the mid-1800s, West 23rd Street became the center of American theater, and Chelsea became an early center for the motion picture industry, with Mary Pickford’s films shot at the top of the Armory Building and other studios located on 21st and 23rd Streets.
Today, Chelsea has become an alternative shopping district. Along with well-known names, it is home to a number of ethnic clothing boutiques, restaurants and delis. Along with the numerous residents, the West Chelsea Art District is home to over 370 art galleries.
There are many public schools, and the well-known Fashion Institute of Technology has its home there. Many different cultures thrive in the Chelsea area, and with all the diverse activities, there has been an increase in the building of new homes.
Slate Condominiums, located at 163 West 18th Street, is a relatively new building. Built in 2007, it rises twelve floors and contains twenty-nine residences. Some of the units have unbelievable views of the Empire State Building and the Hudson River. Also available in some of the units are terraces. However, there is no roof deck or sidewalk landscaping. There is concierge service. However, there is no doorman. Also available are a fitness center, meditation room, garage parking and individual storage spaces. Slate Condominiums is a little oasis in a large city.
